Europe Calling “Europe’s Digital Constitution?”

With Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen and others – Thu, 27/1, 8 pm CET

Dear friends,

This Thursday (20/1/2022), the European Parliament adopted its negotiating position for the major digital legislative package DSA. This Digital Services Act is supposed to become nothing less than the new digital constitution for Europe. It rewrites the rules for major digital platforms, from Facebook to Telegram. In the fight against hate, propaganda, disinformation and radicalisation, the EU is going to finally get the tools it needs to protect democracy and freedom of expression.

It is a fact that digital platforms have an enormous and often destructive influence on democracies in Europe and the world.

But the big digital corporations have so far fought off  strong rules to protect our democracy. At the same time, new rules must not interfere with legitimate content or endanger freedom of expression – a balancing act that will also play an important role in the negotiations between Parliament, Member States and the EU Commission, which will start the week after next.

We want to discuss this in the next edition of Europe Calling – the first as a newly founded NGO “Europe Calling” – with high-level guests and all of you. Our guests are:

  • Frances Haugen, Facebook whistleblower & computer scientist
  • Peter Pomerantsev, author “This is not propaganda”, Visiting Senior Fellow at the Institute of Global Affairs at the London School of Economics
  • Felix Kartte, Director of the German office of Reset, Initiative for digital democracy

Hosted by Alexandra Geese MEP, DSA Negotiator for the European Parliament and founding board member of Europe Calling.

When? Thursday, 27.1.2022, 20:00 – 22:00h CET

The webinar will be simultaneously translated into German.
